Text Box: Parents worry. It‘s part of the job description. Most parents worry a lot but do we worry about the right things? Do we in fact worry enough about the right things?
Today, the vast majority of children have access to a computer. Many have computers in their homes. Most schools have computers with access to the internet. As a parent, it is not only your right but your responsibility to know exactly how your kids are using the internet, what they are doing, who they are talking to, what they are saying, when they are going online, and where they are going in cyberspace. You wouldn‘t let your kids go out at night if you didn‘t know where they were going, what they were doing, who they were going with, and when they would be coming home. Unfortunately, we have to approach online activities with the same degree of scrutiny as outdoor ones.
The internet is a dangerous place. It‘s sad but true. As parents, we recognize that dangers exist. We understand that there are predators out there who pose real risks to our kids. Unfortunately, the internet creates a whole new set of problems. While we can guard our children against outside threats, locking the doors at night, establishing curfews, monitoring who our kids hang out with, the internet is something that is in our homes; it brings a whole range of threats into our homes and for the vast majority, as grave as the dangers are, we don‘t necessarily recognize them or do anything to minimize them. The purpose of this book, by and large, is to rectify this problem.
It is time to change the way that parents relate to the internet. First of all, we need to educate ourselves. This is the relatively easy part although there is definitely work to be done and the need is immediate.
According to one study conducted by Internet Solutions for Kids:
4,000,000 children are posting content to the Web everyday
15,000,000 youths use Instant Messaging
89% of sexual solicitations are made either in chat rooms or on Instant Messages
20% of children age 10-17 have received unwanted sexual solicitations online; (that's one out of every five kids)
95% of parents don't recognize the lingo kids use to let people know that their parents are watching
81% of parents of online youth say that kids aren't careful enough when giving out information about themselves online
76% of parents don't have rules about what their kids can do on the computer
65% of parents believe that kids do things online that they wouldn't want their parents to know about
75% of youths who received an online sexual solicitation did not tell a parent online:
Most victims of "online predators" are teenagers, not young children
5% of cases involved violence
3% involved abduction
When it comes to your teenagers, if you think that they can take care of themselves, take a look at the figures and facts collected by "Just The Facts About Online Youth Victimization: Researchers Present the Facts and Debunk Myths, May 2007". These numbers are based on a sample of law enforcement cases which Finkelhor et al. but they clearly show why parents must take an active role to protect their teenagers online:
Most victims of "online predators" are teenagers, not young children
5% of cases involved violence
3% involved abduction
Deception does not seem to be a major factor
5% of offenders concealed the fact they were adults from their victims
80% of offenders were quite explicit about their sexual intentions
These crimes are "criminal seductions‖, sexual relationships between teenagers and older adults
73% of cases include multiple sexual encounters
In half the cases, victims are described as being in love with the offender or feeling close friendship
In a quarter of the cases, victims had actually ran away from home to be with the person they met online and 7% of arrests for statutory rape in 2000 were Internet-initiated.
EU Kids Online is just one of a number of organizations that has been tracking the online risks faced by children in various countries in the EU. Their research offers quantitative estimates of risk and a good place to start our review.
